Description
This is an unusual photograph. A Minotaur Rocket Launch from Vandenberg Air Force Base, located northwest of Los Angeles, occurred right around sunset on September 22nd, 2005. However, in Avra Valley, Arizona, the sun had already set some time prior. The rocket launch, as seen from Avra Valley, was awesome and looked like something from a 50s science fiction movie. About 10 minutes after that, the spent rocket fuel spread out in the upper atmosphere and caught the direct light of the sun while the lower portion was illuminated by the reddish sunlight of the setting sun. The colors present in the upper portion are amazing. The situation didn't last long but I was able to take this 15 second timelapse photograph before it all dispersed and faded out.
